Day to day: Dust with a dry cloth, or wipe with a barely damp one and dry straight away. Do not leave water standing on the top.

Heat and wet: Mats under hot dishes, coasters under cold glasses. A veneer top marks from a hot pan and rings from a sweating glass, and neither sands out the way it would on solid timber.

The fluting: Dust settles in the grooves. A dry paintbrush or a vacuum brush head clears it in seconds.

Avoid: Abrasive pads and long direct sunlight.

The legs are set in, so the chairs go anywhere

Two fluted plinths, both pulled well inboard of the ends. That means no leg where a chair wants to be — one at each end and three down each side, or shove everybody to one side for a card game. Nothing is ever in the way, which is not something you can say about a four-legged table.

Reeding, which is the detail that dates well

Vertical fluting cut into each plinth, catching a line of light and a line of shadow down the full height. It is a cabinetmaker's trick that has been around a century, which is a genuinely useful quality in a dining table — it will not look like a particular year in five years' time.

Solid frame, veneer top, and that is deliberate

The structure is solid rubberwood so the joinery has real timber to hold. The top is ash veneer, which is what keeps 63 inches of surface flat in Hawaii humidity — a wide solid top moves here and a top that moves eventually cups. It is the less romantic answer and the one that survives.

Seats six without dominating the room

63 by 31.5 inches at standard 29.5-inch height. The rounded ends buy you circulation space a rectangle does not — you can walk past the end of this table in a gap where a square corner would catch you. Any of our dining chairs sit under it; the Lauhala cane chair is the pairing the factory photographs it with.
