The rope seat: Vacuum with a brush head. Blot spills immediately and let it air-dry — do not soak it, because rope holds water in the weave and will mildew in humid air.

The wood: Dust dry, or wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry straight away.

Honest limit: A rope seat is not the chair for the guest who eats over it. Keep the upholstered Nalu for that side of the table if you have small children.

Rubberwood is a natural material — grain, knots and colour vary from chair to chair, so the two in your set will not be identical. The rope seat is hand-woven, so tension and pattern vary slightly too.

One broad curve across your shoulder blades, held on two slim uprights, and nothing else. It is the oldest trick in chair design — put the support exactly where the body wants it and leave the rest empty. You end up sitting further back in this chair than you expect to.

A woven rope seat, which is cooler than it sounds

Literally cooler. Rope woven over a frame lets air through, so it does not turn sticky on a warm evening the way a padded vinyl seat does. It also gives a little under you, which is why a chair that looks hard turns out to be fine through a three-hour dinner.

Solid rubberwood, and it arrives built

No bolts, no allen key, no wobble six months in because a joint was never pulled up tight at your dining table. It comes out of the carton finished. And the seat is the part that eventually wears — a rope seat can be rewoven long after a foam pad would have been thrown away.

Two chairs per order. At 22 inches wide they tuck under a 63-inch table three to a side, and the open back means a row of them does not wall off the room the way upholstered chairs do. They suit the Kona and the Kailua tables particularly well.
