The cane: Vacuum with a brush head, or work a dry paintbrush through the weave. Blot spills straight away and let it air-dry. Never soak it — wet cane stretches, and stretched cane sags permanently.

The wood: Dust dry, or wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately.

Avoid: Direct sun, which makes cane brittle, and standing on the seat, which puts a point load in the weakest part of a woven panel.

Honest limit: This is an indoor chair. A covered lanai in Hawaii is still humid enough to shorten the life of the cane.

Rubberwood is a natural material — grain, knots and colour vary from chair to chair. The cane is woven by hand, so pattern and tension vary slightly between panels and between the two chairs in your set.

The legs go out, not down

Each side is a pair of legs splaying from a single point, like a compass opened up. It gives the chair a wide, planted stance on a narrow footprint, and it is the reason something this light does not feel tippy when you lean back into the armrests.

On a warm evening a woven seat is the difference between sitting comfortably and peeling yourself off a vinyl pad. The trade is honest: cane is the part that will eventually want attention, it does not love standing water, and it should not live on a sunny lanai. Indoors it will outlast the chair's first decade.

Arms, at a dining chair price

Flat wooden armrests that clear a 29.5-inch table, so these can sit at the ends where an armchair usually costs twice as much. Sold as a set of two and shipped flat, so there is some assembly — the frame bolts together and the caned panels arrive fitted.
