Carcass and Drawer Fronts: Melamine
Day to day: A soft cloth with warm water and a drop of mild soap, then wipe the soap off and dry. Melamine handles more than a lacquer does, but do not leave standing water on the top.

Drawers: If one starts to stick in humid weather, rub a candle stub or a bar of soap along the runners. Normal behaviour in Hawaii, not a defect.

Tall furniture: Load the bottom drawers first and do not open more than one at a time. A five-drawer chest this narrow will tip if you climb it, so anchor it to the wall if there are small children in the house.

Avoid: Abrasive pads and scouring powders, which dull melamine permanently.

Cream drawer fronts set into a walnut-toned carcass, with a shadow line around each one. A five-drawer chest in a single colour is a slab. Split the frame from the fronts and the same piece reads as something built rather than something delivered.

Five drawers, and all of them deep

Not four useful ones and a shallow tray at the top. Five full-depth drawers stacked to 42.75 inches, which is the height where the top is still a usable surface rather than a shelf you cannot see onto. Sweaters fit. So do the things that never fit anywhere.

No handles, every corner rounded

The fronts are pulled from a recess, so the face stays unbroken and there is nothing to catch a sleeve or bark a hip on. Every outside edge is radiused. In a bedroom you navigate in the dark, that is not a styling decision. The surface is melamine, which takes a knock better than a lacquer.

Tall rather than wide

31.5 inches across and only 15.75 deep, so it takes a narrow wall and gives back five drawers. The Punaluu Nightstand is the same design in miniature — same two tones, same rounded corners, same recessed pulls — if you want the bedroom to look like it was bought together.
