The leather: Dust with a dry cloth and wipe with a barely damp one. Twice a year, work a leather conditioner into the straps — Hawaii air is salt-laden and leather dries and cracks faster here than on the mainland. Blot spills immediately; do not soak.

The frame: Dust dry, or wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry straight away.

Avoid: Direct sunlight, which will bleach and stiffen leather straps faster than anything else, and saddle soap or solvent cleaners.

Leather is a natural material — grain, tone and markings vary from hide to hide, and the straps will darken with use. Wood grain and colour also vary from piece to piece and can read warmer or cooler in your room than on screen.

One open point: the factory's specification lists the frame as white ash in a natural finish, while their own photography shows a noticeably darker frame. We are confirming which one ships and will update this page before it goes on sale.

The seat and back are wide leather straps woven over a frame. They give where your weight goes and hold firm everywhere else, which is why a chair with no padding in it is comfortable for an entire afternoon. Nothing to flatten, nothing to replace, nothing to plump.

It sits you back and down — 28.75 inches high, 27.5 deep. This is a chair for reading and talking, not one for getting up out of quickly. If you want something to perch on, this is not it. If you want the chair people head for, it is.

Leather gets better, unlike fabric

Fabric wears out. Leather wears in — the straps darken where hands and elbows land, and the finish picks up a patina nobody can fake. The frame is solid ash, sculpted and cross-braced rather than bolted square, so the whole thing flexes slightly with you instead of fighting you.
