The stone: A soft cloth with warm water, or a mild pH-neutral cleaner. Dry it off to avoid water spots. Wipe acidic spills — citrus, wine, vinegar — rather than leaving them to sit.

The edge: Stone is at its most vulnerable at the rim. Avoid sharp knocks to the edge, and do not let a chair back bang into it.

The wood base: Dust dry, or wipe with a barely damp cloth and dry straight away. A dry paintbrush clears dust out of the fluting.

Avoid: Abrasive pads, scouring powders and bleach on the stone.

A surface that does not ask you to be careful

Stone does not ring from a cold glass or scorch from a warm dish, and it wipes rather than needing to be treated. The one thing to respect is the edge — stone is strongest in the middle and most vulnerable at the rim, so do not swing a cast-iron pan onto the lip of it.

No legs at all, so chairs slide in anywhere around the full circle and cleaning underneath takes one pass. It is a heavy table at 165 lbs, most of that in the top — plan on two people to set it down, and then plan on never needing to move it again.
