Everyday cleaning: Dust with a dry soft cloth. For marks, use a barely damp cloth and dry the surface straight away.

Spills: Wipe up promptly. The paint finish is sealed, but standing liquid at an edge or a seam can work its way in over time.

Avoid: Abrasive pads, scouring powders, solvents, and bleach- or ammonia-based cleaners. Do not set hot items directly on the surface, and use coasters under cold drinks.

The cabinet: Keep the hinge clear of dust and do not hang weight from an open door.

Placement: Keep out of long direct sunlight and away from heat vents, which can fade or lift a painted finish.

A pattern you only notice on the second look

From across the room the Pearl is a calm pale circle. Stand over it and the top breaks into a chevron of alternating grain, laid out like a parquet floor. It is the kind of detail that makes people ask where you got it, which is more than most coffee tables manage.

The little one is the show-off

Alongside it sits a pedestal side table with a rose-toned marble-look top on a round column. Pale pink against pale wood should not work as well as it does — it is the one warm note that stops a neutral room going flat.

Two heights, two jobs

The round sits low at 14 inches, under the cushion line, for cups and feet and the coffee table book. The pedestal stands at 17.5 inches — armrest height — so it belongs beside a chair rather than in front of the sofa.

No corners, in a room that has enough of them

Both pieces are round-edged, which matters more than it sounds in a living room with a walkway through it. The pedestal in particular has no legs at all to catch a foot on. Dust both dry, wipe marks with a barely damp cloth, coasters under cold drinks.

Pale, round, and quietly the nicest thing in the room — with a warm blush in it if you look properly. Pick it if everything you own is already neutral and you want one pair of pieces doing something slightly more interesting than behaving.
