The back comes round the sides

Not a rail across the shoulders — a deep curve that wraps, so you can lean sideways into it and stay there. That is the whole difference between perching at a counter and sitting at one, and it is what turns a kitchen island into the place everybody ends up.

Footrests on three sides

Stretchers at the front and on both sides, so your feet find something whichever way you have turned on the seat. A stool with nowhere to put your feet is a stool nobody sits on twice, whatever it looks like in the photograph.

Solid rubberwood, arrives assembled

It comes out of the carton built, which matters more on a 40-inch stool than on anything else in the house — height multiplies every millimetre of slack in a joint. The seat is a wipe-clean faux leather pad, which is the right surface for something that lives next to a stove.

Measure your counter before you order

The factory gives us the overall height — 40.25 inches to the top of the backrest — but not the seat height, and seat height is what decides whether a stool fits. We have asked for it rather than guess, because a stool at the wrong height is a return plus freight both ways. The rule of thumb: you want 10 to 12 inches of clear space between the seat and the underside of your counter. The Waialua is an inch shorter overall than the Kaena, though a deeper back accounts for some of that, so do not read the two as different height classes until the factory confirms both seat heights.
