Surface and Finish: Walnut veneer
Day to day: Dust with a dry cloth, or wipe with a barely damp one and dry straight away. Do not leave water standing on a veneer top.

Heat and wet: Coasters under glasses, mats under anything warm. A veneer top rings and scorches, and neither mark sands out.

Drawers: If one sticks in humid weather, rub a candle stub or a bar of soap along the runners.

Tall furniture: Load the bottom drawers first, open one at a time, and anchor it to the wall if there are small children in the house.

Avoid: Abrasive pads, scouring powders and long direct sunlight, which lightens walnut unevenly.

Walnut veneer grain and colour vary from piece to piece, and the five drawer fronts within one chest will not be identical to each other. That is the wood, not a fault. This is a veneer surface over an MDF core, not solid walnut.

All one wood, and that is the point

No contrast panel, no painted front, no metal. Five drawers in walnut veneer with the grain running across the face, and a shadow line between each one doing all the work a handle would otherwise do. It is the quietest piece in the range and the one that will still look right in ten years.

It floats, just slightly

The plinth is set back from the face, so the whole chest reads as lifted off the floor rather than planted on it. That is a millimetre-level decision, and it is the difference between a five-drawer chest looking heavy in a small bedroom and looking like it belongs there.

Veneer over MDF, and we would rather say so

A solid walnut chest this size costs several times more and moves with Hawaii humidity. Veneer over a stable core gives you the same grain and the same depth of colour and it stays flat. The honest trade: a deep gouge cannot be sanded out the way it could on solid timber, so use coasters on the top.

Tall and narrow, with a wide sister

31.5 inches across and only 15.75 deep — five drawers out of a narrow wall. If you have the width instead of the height, the Wailea Wide Chest is eight drawers in the same veneer, and the Wailea Nightstand and Vanity Set finish the room.
